Janadriyah Cultural Festival, Riyadh

I ventured again to Riyadh, or the outskirts to be exact, in April 2013 for the annual Janadriyah Cultural Festival which is organised by the National Festival for Heritage and Culture.  From an expat perspective, the festival is an opportunity to get up close and personal with some ancient Saudi history and see cultural activities.

On arrival at the festival it became evident just how big was the festival, many people with lots of things to see. Fortunately we had a guide so we were ushered from museum, to traditional houses with bridal suites to fisherman making their nets and women selling their traditional craftwork from various materials such as pottery, leather and weaved wares.

There was time to sit down and watch a regional dance and thankfully small as I am me and my group were ushered to front row seats.  It was endearing to hear the musical story of a grandfather telling his grandson of a past event.  The dancers were indeed energetic and many in numbers.

A further stroll around the festival will lead you to an area where there are government organisations. Art museums proudly display paintings and craftwork.

You can have henna tattoos done, listen to folk poetry, visit the food stalls, tour castles

or just sit down and relax and soak in the atmosphere.

    • You can start off with a free theme. This way you can test your ‘blogging’ feet to see if you like what it entails.
      Then you can build up your site using a paid theme and tailor it to suit your needs and style.
      Never underestimate the power of colour on your site.
      Some of it will be trial and error but the joy is in seeing your site slowing but surely evolving into how you want it to be.
      Money does not always buy taste, so keep to your own style and design and as long as you’re happy with it build on it.
      The beauty of your blog is that it does not have to be set in stone – you can change it. Happy building!

    • WordPress is an good all round platform, if a little constraining.
      ASP.Net have done a competent job developing the open source Blogengine platform.
      The Blogengine with a high range of features, seems to give users a sense of freedom with customization and plugs in easily to self-hosted sites.

      1.Download WordPress BlogML Export 1.0a located at: http://blogml.codeplex.com/releases/view/171 – BlogML will save you on what is a time consuming task.
      2.Replace export.php with the “above” downloaded one.
      3.Export the posts. Remember to remove the extra posts (the revisions).
      4.Import the xml file through the Import/Export option in the BE admin.
